My Top 10 Backsplash Trends this year.

How many of you sit in front of the t.v. watching your favorite design shows cringing at the sight of some of the selections these designers choose? We’ve all been there trust me and don’t get me wrong there are so many things I love when they are creating these spaces but some of them are a little over the top am I right?

With that being said I decided to create a list of my top 10 favorite back splash trends for this year. Some trends are unique, some are classic and some can be pretty bold (in a tasteful way of course).

So are you ready to join me and snatch some great ideas for your kitchen design or remodel? I can’t wait let’s go!

10. Bold colors

Bold colors can either work beautifully or end up being over the top. Usually when I am using a bold color splash I make sure I am mixing it with other neutral tones keeping counters, cabinets and kitchen décor very simple. With bold colors the biggest challenge is toning down the color and allowing it to be a focal point tastefully, without overwhelming the space with other patters and textures. Bold colors are meant to make a statement however, you want to use it in a way that still portrays a timeless design.

9. Pattern tiles

A pattern tile can be a fun way to play on the style and design in your kitchen. Whether you are into a vintage, classic, modern style etc., a pattern tile can really give your space that unique touch to bring it all together. If I am designing a space where I know I will be incorporating a pattern the biggest question is what is the overall style of the space? That will determine shape, color and layout of the tiles. Let me break that down for you….if I am designing a space that fits the style of a more classic kitchen, my colors and shapes might be more subtle like a cream, white, beige or black subway or brick pattern.

If I am going for more of a vintage look I will source diamond patterns or stacked tiles to give it more flair from that genre and incorporate some bold or neutral colors to bring that style back to a specific era.

Pattern tiles are a great way to give a space character and separate the look from a more current trend that is being used.

8. stacked subway

My favorite thing about a stacked subway is you can pull off various styles with this look. If you have a space that is modern, traditional, mid century modern, retro etc. this splash can create a timeless look for any of those styles.

Another fun way to use a stacked subway is using different textures such as matte, polished, glass and porcelain. The direction of these tiles can play a role in making a space look larger as well.

This gives the space a little something extra while keeping the colors and the shape subdued.

7. Geometric shapes

I love love love a geometric backsplash! I feel like it gives the kitchen a fun personality and just livens up the room. If you are going classic or bold this look gives you everything you need to add a pop to your kitchen.

For me a geometric pattern adds depth to a space and allows it to stand out. When considering a geometric pattern make sure you consider the scale of the pattern. If a pattern is to large it can overwhelm a space and if it’s to small you may lose the focal point in your kitchen.

I like to have fun with these tiles by either going tone on tone, mixing up the textures or choosing a different color grout line for a punch of color.

6. textured tiles

Textured tiles although beautiful can be a tricky tile to work with. A few things to keep in mind when choosing a textured tile is the cabinetry, the flooring and the texture of the tile itself.

What does the cabinetry and flooring have to do with the tile you ask? EVERYTHING. A matte, glossy or metallic splash can help create a luxurious look downplaying the floor tile if it’s busier. A textured stone, brick or drywall backsplash will create a more rustic style which is more versatile with subtle or busy floors.

One other thing that is often overlooked when choosing a textured splash is the maintenance of it. Is it easy to clean or will grease and oil, build up in-between the texture of the tile. It may seem like a minor issue but day in and out having to clean every crevice may be a lot more work than most expect.

5. Reflective

The best part about adding a reflective backsplash to your space is that it gives you the illusion of a bigger space along with adding style to the overall kitchen. My absolute favorite type of reflective splash is an antique mirror subway tile. It adds texture and light along with making the kitchen feel upscale and luxurious.

I refer to my reflective splashes as kitchen jewelry because it catches just enough light to add a glimmer and sparkle to the wall that will be sure to catch your guests attention.

4. Backlit

When a splash or counter is backlit the mood completely changes in a kitchen. It offers a very sophisticated, sexy, sleek vibe to a space, where you can sit at the kitchen island, have a romantic dinner for two with a glass of wine.

Lighting plays a huge role in how a backsplash or counter is presented and I have to say it instantly becomes a conversation piece. When guests walk in they instantly notice the glow and the unique design becomes the topic of conversation for many.

This is not an inexpensive addition by any means however you will never want to leave your kitchen once it’s installed. Most granite companies will provide these services just keep in mind you are adding more to the price tag and more to the timeline of completion.

3. Mixed splashes and textures

Mixing tiles and textures is a great way to elevate your kitchen especially when you use a tone on tone splash. Just like the picture shown they have a matte almost slate textured tile and added a high polished tile at the end for a sleek modern look that catches the eye.

This look allows the polished tile to act like an accent tile while keeping all of the colors consistent and the overall look and feel of the space modern and minimalistic.

A very subtle design move that takes this kitchen to a whole other level of luxury.

This can also be done by running a splash half way up and adding a shelf on the actual splash breaking up textures.

2. full slab

A full height splash can be a great versatile splash no matter what style. I have used this splash in a traditional, modern, contemporary and farmhouse design which create a timeless look for each space.

I love the simplicity of a full height natural stone splash, to me it creates a calming and simple look that is relaxing to come home to.

It creates a cohesive look from the counter top to the splash providing an easy to clean surface. The full height splash also provides protection for the walls and creates a spacious look which enhances the beauty of the space.

  1. Natural elements

Here we are at my number one pick and all time favorite for backsplash selections…..Natural Elements!

For me a natural splash like a brick, stone or cement, transports me to a different place. I feel like I am standing in a kitchen overseas maybe in a small cottage in Europe it creates a feeling of something different than what I’m used to.

The space is no longer sterile, it’s a soft, serene space that brings the outdoors in.

Stone and brick and other natural elements are extremally durable which is a great benefit when choosing a backsplash.

The colors are soft, the textures blend perfectly and the the vibe in the kitchen completely transforms.

With all of the options above the main thing to consider when picking a backsplash is not just the pretty one on the shelf….you have to take many things into consideration. You have to envision what you want the overall style to be, how to use that style to create a timeless look that won’t be outdated in a year or so, how to use bold accents in a calming way and how to make sure the colors and patterns don’t become overwhelming.

I hope this helps you in making your backsplash decisions a little easier and as always if you need help contact me through my website I am happy to help www.melissalarosainteriors.com.
